Back in 1989 we were used to the idea of cars being imported from Japan, Eastern Europe and even South Korea, but from Malaysia? Well, that was something altogether different. Behind the scenes though, the newcomer was, in fact, based on a Mitsubishi Lancer. It was an up-to-date, front-wheel drive saloon or hatchback with a choice of two engines (1.3 or 1.5 litres) and three grades of trim. The Proton MPI was widely regarded as the first reliable value-for-money vehicle on offer in the UK; thus winning a number of awards including:
