What is the Motability Scheme?

Motability is a registered charity set up to help disabled people and their families to become more mobile. It was set up in 1977 to provide vehicles and powered wheelchairs to disabled people.

Special terms have been arranged with Proton as well as wheelchair and vehicle adaptation suppliers, banks and insurers so that a variety of schemes can be offered to enable disabled people to become more mobile.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for any of the Motability Schemes you must currently be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  1. The Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC of DLA) or
  2. War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or
  3. Currently be driving a Government vehicle, trike or mini.

Applications are welcomed providing the HRMC of DLA award length is for at least 12 months.

What if I don't drive?

You don't have to be a driver to qualify for one of the Motability Schemes. If you prefer, you can obtain a vehicle as a passenger and propose up to two other people as the permitted drivers through the Contract Hire Scheme.

General information

Please read these notes in conjunction with the Motability Scheme Brochure.

Contract Hire Scheme
The contract hire facilities are provided by Motability Finance Ltd, City Gate House, 22 Southwark Bridge Road, London SE1 9HB (MFL). Written quotations in respect of the hiring of a vehicle are available on request from MFL.

To be eligible for the Scheme you must be receiving the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) and have at least 12 months remaining of the award notice (contract hire) from the date the car is delivered.

Advance Payments
Some vehicles require an advance payment. Please note advance payments are not refundable on termination of the agreement.

The advance payment and weekly rental you pay has a Price Guarantee for contract hire cars, this ensures that the price you agree on application is the one you pay when you collect your car.

The price guarantee stands however long it takes for your new car to be delivered. The only case where the price may alter is if the car description is changed subsequent to the original application.

Insurance
The payment of insurance premiums is covered by MFL. As cars are covered by a 'block policy', no claims discounts are not available. Motability Scheme cars carry an excess for loss or damage:

  • Standard - first £75
  • Ages 16-20 years - first £150
  • Ages 21-24 years - first £100
  • Ages 25 or over holding a provisional licence for < 1 year - £100
