The PROTON R3 Malaysia Rally team set an incredible pace last weekend in the International Rally of Queensland by winning almost every stage in the rally. Australian driver Chris Atkinson and teammate Alister McRae were leading the event that was held in the forests of the Sunshine Coast but unfortunately luck was not on their side.
In a display of amazing speed, the PROTON R3 Malaysia Rally team of Scotland’s McRae and Australian Atkinson almost tasted victory when they were forced to retire from the race, failing to clinch a podium finish but setting impressive timing nevertheless.
Overall, the PROTON R3 Malaysia Rally team won 15 out of the 18 stages for the entire rally. Atkinson won 11 out of the 18 stages, but unfortunately had to retire when his car stalled in a creek crossing. McRae won a total of four stages but also had to retire after damaging his car by going over a large rock on the second stage of the final day of the rally.
India’s Guarav Gill in his Mitsubishi won the International Rally of Queensland, round four of the 2010 FIA-Asia Pacific Rally Championship, crossing the podium in Imbil in the Sunshine Coast hinterland one minute 16 seconds ahead of Australian brothers Glen and Matt Raymond. Gill’s teammate Katsuhiko Taguchi from Japan came in third.
PROTON wins “Rally car vs helicopter” race.
The team may not have won the rally this time around but they certainly made headlines when PROTON and Chris Atkinson got their weekend off to a great start by winning the ‘Rally car vs Helicopter Race' held earlier last week at the Sunshine Coast airport in Queensland, Australia.
The race kicked-off an entire week of events leading up to the International Rally of Queensland, the fourth round of the 2010 FIA-Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). Closed for an hour, the airport coordinated a race between the Proton Satria Neo S2000 and a Robinson R44 helicopter and while it was extremely close Atkinson was able to cross the line a few metres ahead of the helicopter.

PROTON in aid of the needy
While at the Rally of Queensland, PROTON also took the opportunity to contribute to a good cause by participating in a charity auction held earlier in the week. The auction, organized by Variety Queensland, an Australian-based worldwide charity for children, saw PROTON giving away shirts signed by the PROTON R3 Malaysia Rally team’s ace drivers McRae and Atkinson. All proceeds from the auction will be channeled towards transforming the lives of sick, disadvantaged and special needs children in Queensland.
