Proton awarded contract to supply Jumbuck fleet to local council

12 May 2005

When Newport City Council decided to expand their fleet of vehicles, they were faced with a limited choice of either light vans or dual-cab pick-ups to service their Parks section of Continuing Learning & Leisure department.

Newly appointed Proton dealer CB Cars have recently won a contract to supply three Proton Jumbucks to Newport City Council. The Gwent based dealer was awarded the contract within the second week of being appointed as a Proton dealer.

Dealer Principal Andrew Barne explained that they only had one day to prepare the tender as part of a three-way pitch. "The Jumbuck speaks for itself; Newport wanted the convenience of a pick-up with the flexibility and the budget of a light van. Jumbuck fits the bill nicely."

Newport City Council's Parks Manager, Mike McGow is clearly delighted with Proton's commercial vehicle. "The Parks section of Continuing Learning & Leisure at Newport City Council has now taken possession of three new Jumbuck pick-up trucks to help in the maintenance and repair works to the city's parks and leisure areas. It is believed that the new style vehicles will be much more durable and capable of completing the tasks required of the rangers whilst improving the quality of their daily working conditions."

Lotus Engineering has played a key role in the development of the Jumbuck. The result is a rugged workhorse combining pick-up versatility and payload with car standards of comfort ride and handling.

With the spare wheel tucked away beneath the load floor, there is an unrestricted cargo area of 800 litres, with load length of 1.63m. The 415 mm high sides help to achieve a secure load area, while the drop down and removable tailgate has been engineered to support a load of up to 300kg.

A high 170mm ground clearance coupled with long travel shock absorbers helps wheel articulation, while Lotus lends a hand with the overall driving experience which is enhanced by a ride and handling set-up developed by Lotus Engineering.

The rugged vehicles will be used by the council's estate rangers.
